HISTORY OF COLOMBO CATHOLIC PRESS

Year 1865 as day the Colombo Catholic Company saw the light of the day

The beginning of the Colombo Catholic Press goes back to the times of Ceylon under the Colonial Rule. History records, year 1865 as day the Colombo Catholic Company saw the light of the day.

June 7th, 1866 is marked as the dawn of the Sinhala Catholic Weekly “ Gnanartha Pradeepaya” under the Editorship of John Fernando. It was printed at the Catholic Orphanage School Press at Kotahena. In the year 1870, the name of press was changed to Ceylon Catholic Orphanage School Press and in the year 1897, it was change to St. Lucia’s Press.

The Year 1901 is historic as the Catholic Press comes into new premises at Borella. New machinery, equipment, electricity and Telephone facilities were added in the year 1902 and saw the birth of the Tamil printing. By the year 1925, other facilities were added for the improvement of the Catholic Press, with a view to ensure good service.

Stepping into a new era, in the year 1986, Offset Printing System was introduced to the Colombo Catholic Press. Then the Electronic Type Setting department was installed in the year 1992 and in the year 2005 Colour-Printed Paper was Introduced to the Gnanartha Pradeepya. Then in the year 2006 saw the Installation of two Colour-Offset Printing Machine to the Catholic Press. Then in the year 2007 the Colour-Printed Paper was added to the Messenger the Catholic Weekly. Steps were also taken to add New Technology to the Type Setting Department.

The year 2008 saw the Installing of the New Web Offset machine and saw the release of "Lama Pradeepaya", the 'First Catholic Children's Weekly. For the First Time Catholic Weekly in Tamil "Gnanoli" commenced in the year 2010, and making the gate way broad to Colombo Catholic Press, in the Year 2021, Installed the Four Colour Heidalburg Offset Machine.
